Our client approached us to collaborate on redesigning their kitchen and utility room. They had already engaged an architect and secured the necessary planning and building permits. The goal was to transform their outdated ‘U’-shaped kitchen to better utilise the long, narrow space while opening up the rear of the room to allow for sliding doors leading directly to the patio and garden.
Additionally, they wanted to install a picture window at the end of the room to bring more natural light into the dining area.
The utility room, a small room off from the kitchen, was impractical and required reconfiguration to make it more functional. By rearranging the counter space and stacking the washing machine and dryer, we created room for a small sink and added under-cabinet storage.
The client selected a Wren Kitchen, known for offering a wide range of stylish and customisable options. They opted for sleek black units paired with quartz countertops to brighten the space. To add warmth and texture, they chose cladding for one wall and installed natural wood-effect tile flooring.
Given the kitchen’s long, narrow layout, the client chose a large island with a breakfast bar at one end. This provided a practical workspace with beautiful views of the garden and created a cozy, social area within the kitchen.
Our work involved stripping out the existing kitchen and flooring. The previous floor had levelling issues, which we addressed by laying screed before tiling. We also installed a substantial steel beam to support the new double doors, after removing part of the external wall.
Once the structural work was completed, we focused on preparing the walls and floors for the kitchen installation. It is crucial that the walls are straight when installing new cabinetry, and fortunately, this house, being a relatively new build, required minimal alterations. We also relocated the sink, which involved new plumbing, and rewired the kitchen to accommodate modern electrical requirements.
With the structural and installation tasks complete, we finished the space with the client’s chosen touches, such as wall cladding and custom light fixtures. Simultaneously, we tackled the utility room, stripping it down, prepping the space, and laying new tile flooring. We then installed the Wren-supplied units to create a more efficient and functional utility room.
